Immersive technologies have been in a process of development and adaptation for several years. The aim is to combine the possibilities of complex software with the basic need of people to communicate, interact, feel others and their context. Many of us still remember those pioneering 3D glasses, usually made of cardboard and two-colored (red and blue), which filtered images and made it possible to create the optical illusion of three dimensions, sometimes not without difficulty.
Those glasses, created in 1972, are now a vintage and nostalgic object, but they remind us of a path of coexistence between evolution and imagination, from the daguerreotype to the myth of Plato’s cave.
Covid-19 has accelerated the process of implementing immersion in real environments. More products are coming out of their R&D phase to become allies in our day-to-day lives. And, invariably, of professional life. Definitely social distancing and confinement have made virtual visits more valuable. We want to keep visiting places, to be in them, to feel them in some way. In places of historical or tourist interest, but also in schools, car dealerships, neighborhood stores or houses we want to buy or rent.
Today, immersive imaging includes many features that make for an effective, credible and pleasurable experience for users. No one feels out of place navigating a building from a computer or mobile screen. This is largely due to ease of use, but also to additional elements such as videos, 360º images, music, interaction via chat or video call, etc.
The commercial use of these technologies is expanding at a dizzying pace. In real estate, retail, museums, insurance companies and education. They have ceased to be a rarity, a hook to attract attention, to become part of the process of obtaining business opportunities or dissemination of our project. Services that still have a high capacity for growth through pure innovation or the combination of technologies emerge to respond to a growing market and our need to see beyond what biology physically allows. Finally, these solutions have one last advantage: an increasingly affordable price point that makes them accessible to many more business profiles.
The combination of more affordable prices and a commercial and non-decorative use make immersive technologies a safe bet in times of uncertainty.
