The kingdom of Galicia in the stories of Galicia since the 18th century

How was the history of the Kingdom of Galicia told in the tales of Galicia written 300 years ago? And how was it told, for example, in the Galician comics of the 80s? A digital space developed by Orestes Comunica and a scientific team led by the Professor of Medieval History Israel Sanmartín (USC) will allow to consult, investigate and know in what context each of the approaches to the History of the Kingdom of Galicia was made. The website will also include abundant graphic information and video interviews with authors who have approached the study of this historical period in recent decades.

Orestes Comunica’s project is entitled “The Kingdom of Galicia in the histories of Galicia since the 18th century”. It will be developed thanks to the support of the Fund for Cultural Projects ‘Kingdom of Galicia 2021-22’, promoted by the area of Culture of the Provincial Council of A Coruña. It was one of the 20 projects chosen among almost 130 participants. During the presentation of the list of selected initiatives, the deputy of Culture of the Provincial Council of A Coruña, Xurxo Couto, explained that with this project the institution wants to “contribute to the socialization of knowledge and interest in the history, figures, places and moments of the Medieval Kingdom of Galicia”.

The development of “The kingdom of Galicia in the histories of Galicia since the eighteenth century” will begin with the cataloging, analysis and study of nearly a hundred works that, since the seventeenth century, have studied this part of Galician history. Approximately 20% of the oven texts were written more than 200 years ago.

The fruits of this documentation and research work will be organized for publication in a web portal. It will be a space with a clearly informative vocation, both in its graphic presentation, adapted to the most current usability criteria, as well as in its taxonomies and language used. The website will be available in Galician and Spanish, and will have summaries in English and French. The site will also include video interviews with authors who have dealt with the subject and a didactic unit that can be used in schools. Its contents will also be disseminated on social networks.

The project “The Kingdom of Galicia in the histories of Galicia since the 18th century” is the result of collaboration between a scientific team linked to the Faculty of History of the USC and Orestes Comunica. PhD students Brenda Rodríguez, Roque Sampedro, Iago Ferrás and Pablo Fernández will collaborate with the scientific director of the project, Professor Israel Sanmartín.
